Light, information, heat, cooking and cash: the most important preparations for a longer power outage, based on the recommendations of Germany’s Federal Office of Civil Protection (BBK).
Without electricity, a household usually loses lighting, the cooker, the fridge, the internet and phone charging, and with many heating systems also heat. The BBK also points out that cash machines stop working.
If you are prepared, you can get through a longer outage calmly. The points below follow the BBK’s recommendations.
Keep several alternative light sources ready, such as battery-powered, solar-powered or wind-up torches, and remember spare batteries.
The BBK recommends a battery-powered or wind-up radio so that you can follow official announcements during a long power outage.
Make sure laptop and mobile phone batteries are charged. According to the BBK, solar chargers or a power bank can help during an outage.
Smaller meals can be prepared on a camping stove. The BBK warns explicitly: do not barbecue inside a flat or house – there is a risk of suffocation. Also plan long-life food that can be eaten cold.
Keep some cash at hand, because cash machines, and often card payments, do not work during a power outage.
